Guy at the Engadine Ski Marathon - March 2002

Guy completed the Engadine Ski Marathon a couple of weeks ago. It took him 5 hours and 54 minutes to finish the 26.2 mile race, finishing #8,898 out of around 13,000 entrants. Some admistrative error meant that his name was announced at the finishing line in 3 hours and 45 minutes - which meant that some members of the team were scrambling to take photos whereas in reality he was miles away. Of course, his excuse is that there were just too many distractions... the dancing at the start to warm up... the inflatable cow hanging across the valley in Maloja, the beautiful sunshine, people handing out snacks and rivella (a silly, Swiss drink) race, what race?!?

Gladly, those of you who promised to donate money to Children's Nationwide were not asked to donate based on the finishing time - just that he finished. In all, his entry raised a little over GBP 1,200. For those of you who donated, thank you very much! You can find out more about Children's Nationwide at www.children-nationwide.co.uk

Guy intends to return next year. Both to raise money, and to improve his time (plenty of room there). We encourage you to join in next year - there are so many reasons to do so:

It was a beautiful day. And the whole trip was even more fun. in next year - either as skiers (langlauf at Guy Spier speeds is pretty easy), or as a spectator. The Engadine Valley must be one of the most beautiful in the Alps, and it is a winter-wonderland - with many really lovely things to do for everyone, from great children's sledding areas to great adult sledding areas (the bob and the cresta runs). For the otherwise inclined, there are walks in the park, down hill skiing, ski de randonnee, heliskiing great food and, of course, neverending stunning views at every turn.

The group stayed in the very reasonably priced Pontresina Sport Hotel. Our group took up less than 1/3 of the hotel, so there is plenty of space for more. If you are interested, let us know and we'll put you in touch with the right people.
